What it can do for your patients

  • The Turley Backboard Pad is an adjunct to many of the treatments already used in the Emergency Medical Services field
  • Provides comfort never before available in EMS, making the time on the backboard easier for the patient
  • Alleviates potential for pressure points that can later turn into ulcers (bed sores), especially in the geriatric population
  • Aids in treating Hypothermia and Hyperthermia because the pad can be heated or cooled, depending on the patient’s needs
  • Aids in keeping the trauma patient warm (PHTLS 6th edition, pgs.99, 484 and 487)
  • Aids in cooling patients with spinal injuries, STEMI and ROSC
  • The non-skid surface can assist with holding the patient in place once he or she has been placed on the pad
  • There are no attachments necessary.  Application is fast and easy, with many benefits and possibilities (in certain situations, you may need to attach the pad to the board.  We are currently working on a disposable double-sided tape with 3M)

Who we are

My name is Amy Turley, and I have been a paramedic in Washington State for over ten years.  Prior to this, I worked as an EMT-B in Oregon and as a volunteer firefighter.  I learned about how to backboard a patient during EMT Basic School in 1993.  I also spent time on the backboard as a patient myself.  I can remember thinking “This is so uncomfortable!  There must be a way to make a bad situation better for my patients.”  After years of treating patients and feeling guilty for adding to their pain with a necessary treatment, I came up with the idea of a gel pad that could be cooled and heated or simply used for comfort.  I truly believe in treating all of my patients as I would a family member; therefore I will do all that I can for each of my patients to make sure they are comfortable.
